THE INTERNATIONAL STATUTE OF TRANSPARENCY

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. Rather than withholding from one another, we today take a step toward a better future, as the union of two such extraordinary cultures and resources promises a betterment in quality of life for all. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

Her homework was waiting... and had been waiting. But Hadley didn't care. She also knew her brother was looking for her. Again, Hadley didn't care. She was avoiding them both. Beneath her cloak, a black and heavy sweater hung loosely to her upper thighs, the sleeves pulled over her fingers as her school bag rested against her hip. Her winter boots - complete with fur inside and all - thunked softly as she wandered the corridors, searching for a quiet place to just sit for a bit and maybe read a bit more through The Secret Garden. Hadley loved her classics. And reading was about the only time she could really sit still...

Or... A smirk played upon her lips as Hadley's sharp blue eyes darted about. They fell upon a bench not too far away and Hadley approached, letting her messenger bag drop onto it. She opened the flap, revealing the complete and utter mess inside, and dug around for a moment. With a grin, the young Gryffindor retrieved quite the thick and rather worn-looking book: Advanced Charms For Fun, Wit, and Pleasure. It had simply called to Hadley and she knew she had to check it from the library as soon as her eyes fell upon it. Now, she sat upon the bench, one leg crossed over the other, her small and petite frame leaning over the book as it lay open in her lap. Tresses of her hair fell on either side of her face and she hastily pushed them back, clipping them back messily. Her eyes were eager as her fingers flipped through the pages; her other hand went to her mouth as she gnawed on her lower lip, her finger tapping at her chin.

Hadley tilted her head to the side as she found a charm that sounded rather interesting. The problem with Hadley... she got bored. So, so bored, with her school work. It wasn't challenging enough. Ancient Runes was alright.. it was enough brainwork to keep her engaged once she actually started. How useful it would be in the future...well... she's have to find out eventually. She doubted it would be very.

"Alright..." Hadley murmured, straightening up. She glimpsed around to make sure she was in the clear and lifted her delicate wand. She gave it a soft and focused swish, her hand and arm steady as she uttered the incantation. A series of bubbles left her wandtip, each one a different color, and each one changing slowly every couple of seconds. Hadley giggled. Alright, that one was easy enough - but who would like bubbles? No, she needed something... more. She flipped through the pages a few more times and then smirked, straightened, and performed the written instructions:

Her wand tip glowed a soft teal and then slowly changed to orange. Soft sparks left the tip, like embers. As soon as they fell about Hadley, she felt warmth surge around her and she grinned. Maybe this was better than the bluebell flames! The coldness that always seized her during winter time left. Oh, she had to look through more of this book, indeed.

Hadley was about over the cold weather already. Fall was fine: during the crisper season, you could wear a sweater and maybe a jacket and be fine. But in Winter, no... Hadley had to layer and bundle up to the point where it was utterly annoying. Her fingers were freezing after making the trek to Hogsmeade and all she wanted was a nice warm Butterbeer. She had thought about staying behind, but.. the thought of finding a new book of her own was too tempting. The library at school didn't offer much in the way of Fiction.

Hadley pushed the doors open to the Three Broomsticks, letting the warmth of the place wash over with a soft, relieved sigh. Her shoulders relaxed and her taut muscles released slightly. She was always tense in the winter - how else were you supposed to keep warm?

Hadley made her way to the bar and hopped up on a stool, pulling off her gloves one at a time and stuffing them into her coat pockets. It was a simple, black peacoat instead of a cloak. Hadley didn't feel like a cloak kept you as warm as a snug coat did. Plus, they got in the way, what with the swishing and all...

Her cheeks were painted a cold rosy color and Hadley knew later she'd have to dab some salve on them; windburn was a bitch. And she always got it, whether it was quidditch practices or games, or just walking out to Herbology.

She struggled with her scarf and emitted an annoyed sound, finally yanking the stupid thing off and dropping it on her lap, the Gryffindor colors bright against her dark coat. As the waiter came up, she smiled tightly.

"Butterbeer please," she said. Nothing warmed a person up like butterbeer. Or cooled you down on a hot summer day. It was probably Hadley's favorite thing about the wizarding world - a simple drink. She hastily waved a hand to get the waiter's attention again. "And extra whipped cream, please!" She gave him another small smile before sitting back again, shoving her hands into her scarf. Hadley's fingers were still trying to thaw. She kept her arms close to her body as a chill ran down her back, making her shudder.

"Dammit, I hate winter,"
Hadley muttered under her breath, lifting a hand to tuck a strand of blonde hair behind an ear. She would warm up with a butterbeer, go look at the books - and hopefully find one with her saved up summer-work money - and come back for a second butterbeer before trekking back through the foot of snow that blanketed the path. Hadley sighed softly and propped an elbow upon the bar, leaning her chin against it as she waited, her petite form dwarfed by the adult witches and wizards that all mingled nearby.

Hadley had been looking forward to the next Hogsmeade visit. For one, she needed to get Christmas presents for her mum and Alexei; for two, she was eager to get her hands on a new book. Thirdly, she needed some cleaning supplies for her broom.

Even though the wind was whipping her braid around, tugging tresses of her blonde hair free and painting a soft, cold blush upon her cheeks, Hadley trudged on up to the Village with the other students, her head bowed. Her Gryffindor scarf was wrapped tightly around her neck and pulled up to her nose and her glove-clad hands were shoved into her winter coat as she neared the shops.

Her boots left footprints in the snow and the white flecks decorated her hair and shoulders. When Hadley entered a random shop, she breathed a sigh of relief and lifted her head, tugging her scarf down away from her mouth. She rubbed her arms, trying to get warmth back into them. Glancing around, she realized that she had entered a used bookstore and frowned. She had wanted to do her Christmas shopping first, but... what did matter really? It didn't Hadley long to start scanning the shelves. Maybe she could find something for Alexei here. And weren't those "adult coloring books" a thing now? She figured her mum would like that...

But, Hadley was soon lost in the titles, each of them worn while some here and there looked like they had only been read once. For as much as a bibliophile that Hadley was, she didn't own a single brand-new book. She had never had the money, nor did her mum. And she refused to take anything from her dad until he took the hint and vanished from their lives. She tugged off her gloves and stuck them into the pockets of her coat, her cold fingers brushing the spines here and there.

Hadley stopped and plucked a book, examining the cover. It was faded, as if it had sat in the sunlight too long. 'Astrological Magic...'. Hadley didn't even finish reading the subtitle before she wrinkled her nose and placed the book back. She was officially on a mission: she wanted a good fiction book, something long that would take her away from her studies for a bit. She made her way over to the section and began to grab random books, glancing at the titles before placing them back, determination etched upon her dainty features.

It had been a very, very long day. Hadley's fingers and toes were numb from quidditch practice out in the blowing snow; pink brushed the tops of her cheeks, tainting it with wind burn; shivers made her hands tremble as she pulled her cloak closer and the sleeves down roughly over her hands. Her plan had to been to go back to the common room and plop in front of the fire, but Hadley had found it to full of the younger years and she could not deal with the noise at the moment. Instead, she put her broom away and wheeled around, taking to wandering the castle until she found a nice quiet spot, her messenger bag brushing against her hip as her small legs carried her. The previous night she had had detention; today had been full of classes; she had skipped lunch to get an essay done that she put off for a week, and then practice.

Hadley finally found a small nook tucked away in a random corridor where she sat with a grunt. She dropped her bag down heavily and opened it to retrieve a jar, pulling her trick with the Bluebell Flames. She pointed her wand inside and filled with the soft, crackling blue fire, screwed the lid back on, and hugged it close. She did this to a second jar and placed it behind her back. Hopefully no one would bother her here and she could work on getting the rest of her homework done before her brother found her and yelled her ear off again.

Hadley pulled out her first book: Ancient Runes. She wrinkled her nose and sighed, and then grabbed her parchment. Her fingers brushed against a smaller book in her bag - smaller than the rest. She lifted it with a soft smile playing upon her lips: Alice in Wonderland. Hadley bit at her lower lip, her teeth worrying at it as her eyes darted between Ancient Runes and Alice. She hugged the book close and pouted.

"I'm sorry... I'll read you later, I promise," she murmured and tucked the book away. What was one page? No. She could have her brother following her around, pestering her. He had waited out on the Pitch for her, but the cold had made him go inside. Good.

Hadley groaned and picked up her quill. Off to translating... Yet half of her mind still yearned for Alice and her crazy adventures..
