Live the Magic
We are only as strong as we are united

THE INTERNATIONAL STATUTE OF TRANSPARENCY

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. Rather than withholding from one another, we today take a step toward a better future, as the union of two such extraordinary cultures and resources promises a betterment in quality of life for all. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

Sometimes, Hunter really wished that he was less attractive. Well, okay, not often. Maybe not even sometimes. Had that thought even crossed his mind before? Probably not - but right now, somehow, it was front and center. When you were Hunter VanDerberg, you had a girlfriend to stay loyal to, and the pretty brunette bartender wouldn’t stop talking to you and giving you that look, all of a sudden wishing you weren’t attractive wasn’t so crazy a thought. Though, he could’ve just as easily wished that she wasn’t attractive, but that would make his priorities look terrible. That made it seem like he cared that she was pretty. No, it was just that if he were the unattractive one, he wouldn’t have to deal with her coming onto him at all.

It was actually a bit frustrating, because part of him had honestly thought once he’d ended up with Ariel that he’d never have eyes for anyone else. And for the most part, that was true, and he cared about her far too much and had more than enough conviction to hold his own against the female population - but it also didn’t come as naturally as he’d hoped it would. He felt a bit bad that he had to put any effort into it at all. But as the girl leaned on the bar in front of him, chatting about Merlin knows what, Hunter did his best to ignore her face. He double checked all of his responses in his head before saying them out loud - he didn’t quite trust himself to become engaged in a conversation with her, and that alone made him feel guilty. Though, as he glanced up at her, he couldn’t help but notice that, pretty as she was, she had nothing on Ariel. Not that he could think of anyone who did. Plastering Ariel’s face at the forefront of his mind helped. Maybe it would be better just to leave, but he couldn’t. He was waiting for Gwen to finish spending the day in Hogsmeade with her friends - she was meeting him after. He may as well stay and have a few beers.

And then, she was making herself even more clear - which meant he wasn’t doing a good enough job of appearing uninterested. Honestly, did he have to ignore her completely for her to get it? And he didn’t just want to blurt out that he had a girlfriend, because she hadn’t done anything wrong and she hadn’t asked. He raised an eyebrow when, before he was even halfway finished with his current Guinness, the bartender pushed a new one toward him with a big, charming smile, telling him it was on the house. Damn, if he’d known that playing this hard to get would get him free drinks in the past… But he wasn’t even done with his. And he was meeting Gwen soon, so getting hammered wasn’t exactly a good idea. His eyes flickered around the bar - it was a bit empty but there was a bloke who looked around his age one stool away, and he didn’t seem to have a drink yet. And though he didn’t know him, he sort of looked like the kind of person Hunter would talk to. Without hesitating, Hunter moved over a seat and pushed the drink in front of him. ”Want a drink?” he asked, just hoping to get rid of it. He didn’t wait for an answer before pushing the full Guinness in front of the guy. If he didn’t want a Guinness, there was something wrong with him. ”She apparently can’t take a hint,” he added with a grin, as way of explanation, inclining his head toward the pretty bartender.

Hunter had always assumed that last year would be, more or less, the last year he’d have any real connection to Hogwarts. As in, once Ariel had graduated he’d pretty much have no reason to go back. His trips to Hogsmeade would diminish from every few weeks to maybe a couple times a year, because really there wasn’t much sold in Hogsmeade that he couldn’t get in Diagon Alley. He’d have nobody left to visit. The only thing linking him there would be his own nostalgia, and that was a pretty shit reason to make the trip. It still sucked, though. But then, the statute came out. And with it, the announcement that Hogwarts would take in muggles. And then, Gwen’s letter of acceptance. And all of a sudden, his little sister had earned him another three years of visits. He’d be lying if he didn’t admit that it was an added bonus.

Though he didn’t visit Gwen nearly as much as he’d visited Ariel, it was mid October and he’d managed to see her three times since term started. Being that she was his sister, not his best friend, visiting her any more than that would definitely be overkill. He’d seen her today - they’d gotten dinner in the Three Broomsticks, and better yet maintained an upbeat conversation the whole time. Which meant that so far, Hunter was three for three as far as not upsetting Gwen went - but he had a feeling she’d shut down a bit soon. All of the excitement from her starting at Hogwarts seemed to have temporarily wiped the strain out of their relationship. It wouldn’t last forever. But Hunter would enjoy it while he could. And at least he could mark today down as a good visit. They’d talked for a while - Gwen had only just left to go back to the castle, and it was already starting to turn to dusk. Hunter bid her goodbye, but lingered in the Three Broomsticks a bit longer - this was always the point where nostalgia kicked in and he didn’t really want to leave.

Deciding a drink or two couldn’t hurt, Hunter made his way over to the bar. It was pretty empty, as the bar didn’t usually fill up until most of the students had retreated back to the castle, making way for the older crowd. Finding a stool on the end, by the wall, Hunter ordered a firewhiskey. He knew some of the bartenders, but didn’t recognize the one behind the counter. He thanked her though, when he got his drink, and tried to ignore the extra charm she tossed into her smile as she handed it to him. He’d never do anything to lose Ariel, but at the same time, old habits die hard. The grin and witty comment he might have given the girl in the past was second nature, and he had to choke them down. When she moved on to her other customers, Hunter raised the firewhiskey to his lips, letting the liquid burn down his throat. He glanced down at a Daily Prophet sitting on the bar and pulled it closer to him, idly flipping through it to see if he could find an article Aoife had written, or something photographed by Ariel.

He’d just started to skim something that actually had Aoife’s name on it, when a voice cut through his thoughts. He sighed, as he realised some girl behind him was trying to get his attention. Mentally preparing his Sorry, I’m taken attitude, Hunter turned to acknowledge them - and was actually slightly caught off guard, because the girl approaching him looked pretty young. His mind instantly tried to assign her an age, but as it landed anywhere between fifteen and eighteen, he realized he wasn’t entirely sure. Literally all girls looked the same once they hit a certain point. ”Hi?” he replied, not as certain now about her intentions. Without knowing what she actually wanted, Hunter just raised an eyebrow a bit questioningly, waiting for her to speak up.

Work had slowed down slightly - mostly because he’d finished the studying portion of his apprentice and had moved on to working in the field. Which meant that while work itself was busier, his time outside of work had freed up considerably since he wasn’t spending every waking moment reading up on transfiguration or espionage or the second wizarding war. The change had allowed him a bit of room to breathe at least, and it had conveniently come at a good time, being that Ariel had just finished school. That was where he spent most of his free time - with Ariel. Particularly because of how much time he’d neglected to give her over the past year.

But although he’d probably spend every waking moment with her if he could - which was pathetic, as far as his standards went and the only thing that excused it was that it was Ariel - Hunter would be lying to himself to say that he didn’t need other company some of the time. As long as the company was tolerable, obviously. It wasn’t that Hunter didn’t spend plenty of time with people while he was at work, but the idea of going out for the night with an actual friend was a welcome one. So it was with a light mood that he stepped into the Queen’s head pub to meet Daniel.

It didn’t take Hunter long to find his friend amidst the crowd, Daniel’s hair sticking out a bit compared to the rest. Hunter crossed the bar, sliding onto the stool behind him. ”I’ll take a Guinness,” he called to the bartender before turning to Daniel. ”Hey mate!” he greeted him. ”Sorry I’m late. I was helping Ariel look at apartments - yeah, again, but most of them are shit.” Hunter took his Guinness from the bartender and took a swig instantly before setting it down on the counter. ”Once I get her situated, I’ll have to start working on finding you a job that fits,” he added with a grin. ”Still haven’t decided on anything?”

Holy fuck. Who the hell invented alcohol, and why hadn’t someone already punched them in the face ? Actually, somebody probably did. They were probably alive a long time ago, and were swarmed one day by an angry mob of hungover people, and that was how they died. Hunter was pretty sure that if he was alive and aware of whoever it was, he would join in that mob. Unfortunately, he lived in the twenty first century, and the only thing Hunter could do at the moment to make himself feel better was down a bottle of pepper-up potion and hope it worked. It didn’t. Most of the time, Hunter managed to avoid this level of hangover. But he must have had more than usual last night, because rolling out of bed that morning felt an awful lot like death and nausea.

Hunter wasn’t entirely sure how he made it to work. Or why. He’d be useless, obviously. But as far as he knew, it wasn’t supposed to be an awfully busy day. Maybe he could get away with sleeping in his office the entire time, and maybe there was the slightest possibility that nobody would bother him. After pretty much ignoring everybody on his way in, the moment he stepped into his office he slammed the door behind him. ”Ugh,” he muttered to himself, collapsing in his chair and letting his head fall onto the table. This was complete and utter shit. Why had he done this to himself? Hunter had done plenty of drinking in his lifetime - this was the first time that he actually contemplated never doing it again. Not that the thought would stick longer than the hangover - but it was a testament to how terrible he felt. Pressing his forehead into the cold wood of the desk, Hunter took a deep breath and tried to focus all of his efforts on not dying.

He had no idea how long he stayed like that. But at some point, whether minutes or an hour later, Hunter heard footsteps just outside his door. Without a knock, he heard the door swing open. His face still pressed against the desk, Hunter didn’t even bother moving. He’d be hard-pressed to move for just about anyone, save maybe the head auror - but the light footsteps and lack of a knock told him that the person coming in was just Aeva. ”Can I have your coffee?” he asked instantly, the words mumbled by the desk. He didn’t have to look up to know she had one with her. ”I forgot to grab one on my way past. Also, could you knock me out? I think it might make me feel better.” Lifting his head off the desk was a way bigger effort than he ever thought it could be. It felt more like trying to lift a three ton weight, and it took him a few moments to manage it without his stomach protesting too badly. “Oh, and also, I need you to cover for me at noon - I was supposed to go on a run with McNalley. Just tell him you got assigned to him instead. He told me he’s into you, so he won’t exactly bother to question it.” Then, after a moment, he actually looked up at Aeva and added, ”Please?”

The Statute of Transparency… To be honest, the first thing Hunter thought about it was that they could have picked a better name. Transparency. It was a terrible word for a not so terrible idea. Transparency meant opening up, showing all your weaknesses. Having no secrets. All the statute did was put muggles and wizards on a slightly less unbalanced - but still not even - playing field. Honestly, Hunter wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about. If anything, the muggles had more reason to fuss - non-magical families all over the world having to accept that there’s magic? If he weren’t a wizard himself, he wouldn’t believe it. When it came down to it, wizards were unfairly more powerful. They always would be. Why did they need the element of surprise as well? There was no denying that it would accomplish what it didn’t outrightly say, but obviously meant - muggles would be ever so slightly safer this way. After what happened to Hunter’s brother, there wasn’t much convincing him that it would ever really be a fair fight between the two. Even if it weren’t for Jack, common sense would say the same.

All of that aside, though, the statute did have one incredibly beneficial side-effect. Hogwarts was now taking muggles, because of some bullshit about promoting unity and shit. It was all for show, probably. But no matter what it was for, Gwen had gotten in. And Hunter almost hadn’t expected how excited he was to find out. But when he thought about it, how badly had he always wanted to share Hogwarts with his family in the past? Now, finally, he could share it with at least one of them. It was honestly a strange feeling, sitting at a table in the three broomsticks waiting for Gwen to walk through the door. Because his sister had never belonged here before. Hogwarts was always such a separate part of his life. So when he looked up to see her step through the door, it drew a huge grin onto his face. Because it was just so bizarre.

”Gwen!” he called to her, instantly trying to read her face. This was probably the first time she’d ever been to Hogsmeade. This would be the first time she had butterbeer on tap from the three broomsticks. Sure, he’d brought her the bottled stuff in the past, but there was nothing like one from this particular pub. He pushed the draft one he’d already bought her across the table as she reached him. ”Long time, no see,” he said sarcastically. He’d seen her just days ago on the platform. But she hadn’t seen Hogwarts yet then. Now she had, and Hunter wasted no time in diving right in. “So, how was the train ride? How do you like the castle? The food is great, isn’t it?” There was a bit of added excitement to Hunter’s voice that wasn’t usually there, and it may have given away how long he wished he could have this conversation with his siblings. Hunter had always loved Hogwarts, but being the odd one out at home was never any fun. “Do you like it?” he asked again, even though he’d sort of already asked it once. But this time, the question was a bit more serious.

He’d talked Hogwarts up so much that he hoped it hadn’t disappointed. Not that he could see how it could. But disappointing Gwen wasn’t something he wanted to do. He’d done enough of that to last a lifetime. And though they were far closer now than they had been in a long time, Hunter was well aware that he was still making up for it. Maybe he always would be. There was always that bit of tension between them - that lack of trust that Gwen had for him because of what he’d done. But it was to the point now that half of the time, they both could forget it was there. At least temporarily. Hunter was hoping that now was one of those times. "It’s so weird that you’re here,” he added, grinning and taking a swig of his butterbeer. "Did you make sure to tell everybody you're related to me? It'll make your life way easier, trust me. I was practically a legend," he joked. Though it was true. It was just that legends could be good or bad.
