Live the Magic
We are only as strong as we are united

THE INTERNATIONAL STATUTE OF TRANSPARENCY

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. Rather than withholding from one another, we today take a step toward a better future, as the union of two such extraordinary cultures and resources promises a betterment in quality of life for all. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

If there was one thing Maud loved, it was food. No, really, she did. Even as a child (well, a younger child) she always ate a lot, but somehow managed to stay as skinny as she was. And she never did any exercise, other than all the walking around to get to class- more so now that she was in Hogwarts. The moving stairs always managed to get her off course somehow, and make her walks longer. And all the books she had to carry help with that- they could easily count as heavy lifting.

<p>Or maybe it was all the P.E. classes in Primary School... she wondered if they had P.E. here at Hogwarts. No Maths, no English, no foreign language, and no P.E.? Maud also wondered how that worked. Molly'd told Maud that first years have broom-flying lessons. But what about all the other subjects? What about certain purebloods who never went to Muggle school? They depended on their parents to teach them to read and write, otherwise they'd fail Hogwarts during the first week.

<p>Maud pondered over the wizarding school system as she ate breakfast. It was the start to her second week, and she still didn't seem to have answered all her questions about the place. The owl post had just arrived, too, but Maud had no mail today. Maybe tomorrow. She paused from her cereal and looked up the table, watching the rest of the Ravenclaws open their letters and packages, and wondering who they were from. Families, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends... so many different lives at so many chairs. Someone's parent could've just died, and someone's sister could've just been born.

<p>Of course, all her thoughts were scattered in the split of a second, when Maud noticed that the girl next to her had the <i>coolest hair ever</i>. It was <i>purple</i>. How did she do that?! Was it magic, or just dye? She had to ask... no, no, what if she seemed rude? Nope, too late,

<p>"<b>Your hair is awesome!</b>" Maud burst out. "<b>How'd you get it like that?</b>"

Halfway through Maud's second week at Hogwarts, she's decided on many things that she likes about it. The talking portraits (however annoying they may be), the magic they are taught in classes (although they haven't really cast any spells yet), the appearing and disappearing food (which she will have to look into at some point). And Maud dislikes choosing favourites, because favourites mean demeaning one thing and putting the other on some sort of pedestal. Which she doesn't want to do.

<p>Still, Maud decided that if it was a life or death situation, and she had to pick her favourite thing about Hogwarts, it would be the Ravenclaw Common Room. It was the highest tower in Hogwarts, she'd learned. The view was fantastic, and it even had a small library inside. And the beds were super comfortable, so that was a bonus. Maud could live in the Ravenclaw Tower forever, if food were to start magically appearing on the tables there too.

<p>Maud had been completely unprepared for being sorted into Ravenclaw. Her father had been a Gryffindor, and her big sister was a Slytherin, and all her wizarding relatives were either those, or Hufflepuffs. She had had no idea what to expect, especially for entering it. She'd thought it would only be a password, like Gryffindor and Slytherin. So her surprise was rather great when the eagle doorknocker came to life in front of her eyes and spoke- and how easily the Prefect had answered it! It had given her the impression that answering it all by herself would be just as easy.

<p>Well, it wasn't. Maud was smart perhaps, but she was never <i>that</i> smart. Riddles were frustrating. She preferred straight-forward questions, rather than stupid stuff like, "The more your take the more you leave behind. What is it?" Who cared about that stuff? So far, getting inside the common room for Maud required her to wait outside for ages so someone can let her in, or help her in.

<p>So that was what she was doing today. Books in hand, after she'd just returned from History of Magic- the last lesson of the day- Maud stood outside the common room with an annoyed look on her face. "<b>The books are really heavy. Will you just let me in? I'll answer later,</b>" she grumbled. But the knocker only opened its beak and said,

<p>"How is a raven like a writing desk?"

<p>"<b>Oh, I don't know! Last time I checked, a desk isn't a bird!</b>" Maud exclaimed. She looked down the corridor in frustration, but it was deserted at the moment. Was it time for dinner already? Looking back at the knocker angrily, she just yelled, "<b>I don't know the stupid answer! Why do I have to answer a <i>riddle</i>?! Why not, like, a fun fact about kangaroos or something?!</b>" She was sure she'd heard this riddle before, but had never bothered to listen to the answer- and now she definitely regretted it.

born to a muggle mother and a wizard father, you could say she's had the best of both worlds. she was raised in a "relatively" normal family in a relatively normal neighbourhood in a relatively normal town. as the second sykes daughter, maud lives in her elder sister's shadow, but she doesn't mind. they're both different- where her sister is overachieving, maud is overlearning. perhaps that's why she was put in ravenclaw, and not slytherin like her sister.

<p>she's not especially pissed about exams or becoming someone awesome with a nobel peace prize in the future- the world is beautiful and she wants to learn more about it. and no wonder, with all the wonderful things in both her lives. overall, she's an extremely absentminded but talkative eleven-year old. she overthinks and overanalyzes, loves eating food, hates brushing her hair, and enjoys learning about the wizarding world.

maud is definitely friendly, but odd. she has a habit of zoning out during conversations and coming up with the randomest ideas and thoughts. sometimes she'll make jokes which only she will understand. but she always means well, and as a friend is an extremely thoughtful and loyal one. befriending her is terribly easy- she has thoughts on everything, so start a discussion with her! approaching others is also something maud does, so there's a great chance she'll bump into you instead. her only current friend is her big sister molly, but she aims to make new ones at hogwarts. so, really, be friends with this girl! she's awesome!

<p>

<div class="ginobili"> nemeses </div>

but too many friendlies and happies get boring sometimes. right now, maud's only eleven, so in fights she's just really awkward. but making an enemy of her is almost as easy as befriending her. insulting her or something she is passionate about (which is a lot of things) would do it. and when she's angry about something like that, she'll hold a grudge forever. plus, with her unintentional rudeness and with her being so talkative, annoying someone comes just as easy for her. not that she makes a good enemy. she'll probably just go out of her way to avoid you.

Three years ago, Maud stood on this very platform, watching her big sister leaving for Hogwarts for the first time. She could still picture the excitement on Molly's face, and half of her body out of the window, still waving at Maud and her parents while the train rounded the corner. And Maud watched the same happen for the next three years, waiting for her turn. Both her father and sister got to go there, and both got to brag about how beautiful and magical and fantastical it was. Maud had been so jealous. She hoped and waited for her turn to go- and now this was it. Her first train ride to Hogwarts!

<p>She'd almost forgotten to say goodbye to her parents before she left, too excited to risk missing the train and spending a missed year at home! (<i>What does happen when someone misses the train?</i> she thought, but didn't have much time to ponder on that.) She kept fidgeting all through the farewell hugs, until she was finally let go and able to climb the train with her suitcase. Maud was eyeing the students going up the train halls, entering their compartments with their own cats and owls in their owl cages and toads, and wishing that she'd tried to persuade her parents some more so she could get a pet too-- when her sister Molly interrupted her thoughts, asking her if she'd like company on the train ride. She refused- Molly had done her first train ride alone before, and Maud wanted to experience it by herself as well. Her sister only shrugged, not really caring about Maud's reasoning, and went off to find her friends.

<p>It was then, as she watched Molly disappear into some compartment, that Maud realized that maybe she shouldn't have sent her away. She remained standing in the middle of the hall, staring down it as if starstruck. But really, she was just lost in thought again, debating on whether to join her sister or not. That is, until a rather rude fifth year shoved her as he walked by, telling Maud to watch herself. <i>Just find a compartment,</i> she thought. It would be better than standing around and being shoved all day. And off she went, carrying her suitcase down the train and looking through the compartment windows for free space. Most of them were already full of students- friends chatting to each other, laughing, playing games. <i>Did Molly feel this way too?</i> she thought. Everyone already knowing each other, so there was no space left for her? At that, Maud shook her head. <i>Of course, but all first years would feel like that.</i>

<p>Ten minutes were left before the train was to set off, and Maud panicked. She decided on the spot that she didn't want to keep searching through the rest of the train. For all she knew, it was completely full. So she picked the nearest compartment that didn't have as many people and attempted to slide the door open with one hand. It took her a few moments to manage, and when she did, Maud poked her head inside. She held on to the door tightly as she asked, "<b>Is there room for one more?</b>" Her voice came out more of a squeak, but she hoped they wouldn't notice. She didn't want to give the impression that she was a super-shy ickle firstie.

On this day, Maud has decided that nothing will ever be more fascinating than her first few days at Hogwarts. It's been non-stop excitement for her- the train ride, the sorting, the Ravenclaw common room, her first classes ever. She got to see all the magical feasts and ghosts and the moving staircases. It was like she'll never be able to run out of things to do... <i>I take it back. Nothing will ever be more fascinating than all my time in Hogwarts,</i> she thought. <i>Even getting lost.</i> No matter how much irritating the idea was. She'd gotten lost a handful of times already, and the idea that first years weren't given a map was just stupid to her! Especially when professors then decide to get rude about it.. who creates such a confusing castle, set off a bunch of eleven-year olds into it and get mad at them when they end up lost?

<p><i>Maybe I should map it out myself!</i> Maud thought suddenly, on this fateful Saturday. It was her first Saturday at Hogwarts in fact, and she'd been writing a letter home to her parents (which she quickly forgot about). Eyes going wide, she got to her feet in a hurry, and left the common room with a pencil (carrying a quill and inkpot would be too much effort) and parchment in hand, and a backpack on her back with all the necessary supplies in case she were to get lost forever in the confusing maze that was Hogwarts.

<p>She decided to start at the Entrance Hall- the staircase leading down there was easy enough to find. She'd start with the first floor, and work her way up to the top. That was her plan, at least. But as she was trying to figure out where the rest of the staircases led, climbing up and down, and back up and back down, Maud realized that she was now nowhere near the first floor at all and that she was completely and utterly lost. She walked down a few corridors, and down a few more, until she managed to find a large door, with students wandering in and out. <i>Salvation!</i> she thought, and went over with a half-run. <i>What is this place?</i> And she walked through the door to find out that it was a courtyard, and it was beautiful. She gave a long glance at the blue sky (<i>Funny, it's still September.</i>) and made a mental note to remember this place so she could come back later. But right now she needed to get back to her mapping. Maud then approached the nearest person without much thought. "<b>Excuse me, how do I get back to the Entrance Hall?</b>"
