We are only as strong as we are united

THE INTERNATIONAL STATUTE OF TRANSPARENCY

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. Rather than withholding from one another, we today take a step toward a better future, as the union of two such extraordinary cultures and resources promises a betterment in quality of life for all. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

A day
of drinks and
fireworks.

December 31
The New Year Even seemed a strange holiday to Ardu. It wasn't a day when the Good triumphed, like the end of either of the Wizarding Wars. It wasn't a special day in Nature's cycle, like Solstice. And yet, all wizards celebrated it eagerly. In Hogwarts, the curfew was lifted, which allowed students to stay awake during this transition from one totally unremarkable day to another. Humans.

Nevertheless, Ardu was going to take a part in the celebration, as well, and he chose Hogsmeade as the place to be in, this night. The castle had too many stairs for Ardu's liking, and the stairs weren't designed with his kin in mind. True, Ardu was able to climb them, awkwardly, but it felt like reading the stars in cloudy weather. The centaur taught his classes either outside or on the ground floor, so he rarely faced this ladder problem.

But as it turned out, Hogsmeade had its downsides: the majority of people either packed themselves inside several buildings, mostly Three Broomsticks and Hog's Head, or enjoyed their carriage rides. Not many just stood outside, so Ardu felt alone, walking the streets of Hogsmeade. The centaur could try to squeeze through a door and join the fun inside, but it was so crowded that even if he managed it, he would probably step on too many feet and create too much of an inconvenience.

It snowed. There was still plenty of time till the fireworks, and Ardu hoped to taste some food and drinks. Maybe some of it was unique to the New Year Eve? Three Broomsticks served Butterbeer, Hog's Head served Firewhiskey, and Madam Puddifoot's presumably served tea. Meeting someone outside who could share a drink would be most appreciated for Ardu. Even better, if someone could get inside and buy a Butterbeer specially for the centaur. But so far, there was no people, just snow.

Pietro had done his duty overseeing the students' festivities, and now he'd been relieved and it was time to go get some drinks to ring in the new year. Hogsmeade was always pleasant, and the Hog's Head was the only place where he was allowed to smoke indoors, so off he went. He bundled up thoroughly against the cold. England's weather sure was a hell of a lot different than that of balmy Sicily. There were times when he so sorely missed the sun that he almost could have cried for it.

He arrived in Hogsmeade with his gloved hands shoved deeply into his pockets, a scarf wrapped around the lower half of his face, and wearing a poorly knitted hat with a poofball on top. Because who cared about looking dignified when freezing to death was a risk? He still had his same old stodgy Pietro suit and tie on underneath the layers.

Once he'd arrived in Hogsmeade, pretty much the first thing to draw his eye was the sight of his colleague alone in the street, looking a little dejected. Because, yes, now that Pietro thought about it, the buildings in Hogsmeade weren't exactly set up to accommodate centaurs. Hogwarts was one thing: an enormous castle with arched ceilings that you could sometimes barely see. Hogsmeade itself was full of much more typically sized buildings. Buildings designed for humans.

Pietro didn't know Arduino well, but he'd been a professor at Hogwarts for about the past six months, so they knew of each other, and it couldn't hurt to get better acquainted. Pietro needed to get better at socializing, anyway. Here was an opportunity.

"Hello, Professor!" he called out, waving as he approached. Unfortunately, his colleague didn't have a last name, so Pietro wasn't able to address him as formally as he generally preferred, but he did his best just to roll with it. "Good evening!"

Hogsmeade turned to be a popular place for celebration: today, a lot of people who were neither school staff nor folk from the village came here to have some fun. So Ardu hadn't met anyone familiar until someone greeted him. "Hello, Professor! Good evening!" The man seemed to be the Potion Master, although it was difficult to tell with all that snow and all those clothes. Moreover, human faces looked very similar to Ardu. "Evening, Professor," the centaur replied.

The amount of names wizards used was confusing. First names, last names, often long lists of middle names. And each of them played its own role in human etiquette. Apparently, "Greetings, Pietro" and "Greetings, Antonucchi" had completely different flavors. And not to mess anything up, Ardu decided to go with the title. And the Potion Master had greeted the centaur in the same way, so it had to be acceptable.

Despite they had been working together for a whole semester already, Ardu barely knew the Potion Master. He barely knew anyone, in fact. Most other professors taught either high up or deep down in the castle, often meeting with the Headmaster and Deputy in some private rooms. And Heads of Houses, like Pietro, were especially busy with all this administration, not to mention looking after their House's students.

However, when Hogwarts denied Ardu and Pietro a chance to know each other better for four month, Hogsmeade provided it during the centaur's fifth or sixth visit to the village. Or maybe it was just a unifying spirit of celebration that did the job. "Do you prefer fresh air and the jeweled sky to crowded halls?" Ardu hoped for a positive reply, but considering how much clothes the Potion Master wore to keep himself war and how he hid his hands deep in the pockets of his coat, Pietro didn't feel really comfortable outside.

"Does your House give you any trouble?" the centaur asked, in hope to delay the Potion Master's seemingly inevitable departure. Pietro was the Head of Ravenclaw, and it came with a great responsibility. And probably with a headache, too. "Your students are the most intriguing ones. One young girl has a hair of purple. And one gloomy Prefect can barely mask his annoyance at the whole world."

Ravenclaw students, along with Hufflepuffs, were Ardu's favorites. Students from these two Houses seemed to take Divination more seriously and were way more numerous in his class. Gryffindors and Slytherins were rare, and the ones who chose Ardu's subject often looked like they wanted to be somewhere else instead. So the centaur considered Pietro lucky four having this particular House to care for.
