Live the Magic
We are only as strong as we are united

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. Rather than withholding from one another, we today take a step toward a better future, as the union of two such extraordinary cultures and resources promises a betterment in quality of life for all. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

Mal couldn’t wait for the year over, but at the same time, he wasn’t looking forward to the new one beginning. Every year just sort of rolled together, it wasn’t like anything spectacular ever happened to him. Even things that other people would find wonderful were just sort of bad news for him. The year had brought him a new half-brother and…again, bad news.

The castle felt particularly crowded, and he wasn’t much of one to go outside, so he was sort of stuck milling between the two, doing his best to go undetected by staff and students. It had been working for a while, and he even managed to grab a plate of food without much hassle.

He found himself sitting in a corner in near the entryway, chowing down on his makeshift meal. The Caretaker had made a passing joke, asking if he was standing guard for the evening. Mal just glowered at him until he left. The scowl seemed to stick, and he didn’t have a word for anyone who passed by. Even the one kid that kicked at his legs went ignored.

Why couldn’t people just leave him alone? Why couldn’t the school year just be over? Then he could go back to being alone, just like he liked.

Mid-December 2035 @Liz

As much as Mal hated it, he couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that he had a half-brother. Named Marc. Who went to Hogwarts. Apparently one mistake wasn’t enough for Gregory Sharpe. No, he had to go and find different women to leave children with. Who knew how many other kids he had running around? How many other Mals and Marcuses there were?

He had been stewing on the whole thing for days, from the revelation to the tears on Marcus’ face. He honestly didn’t know what to do. Avoiding Marc was easy enough. They lived in different parts of the castle, took different classes because they were different years, and ate in different parts of the Great Hall. Still, that didn’t mean he could just avoid thinking about Marc and what he had said to him.

I don’t want a brother.

It wasn’t like he had lied to Marc. Not exactly. He didn’t want a brother. He didn’t want someone else who would get close to him, just to leave and disappoint him. He just wanted…Mal just wanted to be left alone. Usually, he got exactly what he wanted. Which lead him to his current predicament. He didn’t have any real friends he could turn to, and he was starting to drive himself mad keeping everything bottle in.

So, he found himself outside Professor Pietro Antonucchi’s office. He was the Ravenclaw Head of House, and supposedly students could go to him when they had issues. He probably couldn’t help Mal with this, but it was worth a shot.

Nah, Mal would probably just wind up wasting his time like he did everyone else’s.

Mal announced himself with a tiny knock, peaking inside the office. “Um…professor?”

- 3rd Year Ravenclaw
- 13
- Muggleborn
- Doesn't like people
- Abandonment issues
- Excels in charms
- Self-esteem issues

Mal doesn't really have much in way of friends, mostly because he
isn't very good at socializing or letting people get to know him.

Mal doesn't know it yet, but he's Marcus Barrow's half-brother.

Despite a few run of the mill bullies, Mal doesn't have anyone he'd
really consider an enemy. He just doesn't care enough.

Mal is still young, and has yet to discover an interest in any sort of relationship
beyond passing curious thoughts.

<div style="text-align: justify; font-size: 11px; line-height: 100%;">
Mal is currently 5’5”…he has yet to hit his real puberty growth spurt. He has a thin, gawky build that comes with being a teenage boy and walks with a slouch. His hair is dark brown, and usually goes a few days at a time without seeing a brush. The most outstanding feature about him is easily his bright blue eyes that greatly contrast with his dark hair and pale skin.

As far as clothing goes, Mal doesn’t have a very distinctive wardrobe. He wears whatever his mother buys for him, and his clothing is usually cheap, dull, ill-fitting, and all around depressing. <div><br>

<div style="text-align: left; font-size: 25px; line-height: 100%; letter-spacing: -3px; border-bottom: 1px solid rgba(0,0,0,0.7); margin-bottom: 2px;">Personality</div>

<div style="text-align: justify; font-size: 11px; line-height: 100%;">
Mal can be described with three key words: sarcastic, misanthropic, and whatever. Now, he doesn’t go out of his way to be a jerk to people. It’s just sort of comes to him naturally. It’s a kind of defense mechanism. If he’s a jerk, then no one will want to get close to him, and he won’t have to worry about being disappointed when they ignore him or leave.

He’s in a perpetual state of ennui, finding little to no enjoyment in anything. Well, almost anything. He has a particular passion for Charms, and it’s the subject he excels in above all his other studies. He’s consistently gotten E’s and O’s in the subject since his first year at Hogwarts, and it’s become a sort of comfort to him to know that he’s at least good at something.

<div style="text-align: left; font-size: 25px; line-height: 100%; letter-spacing: -3px; border-bottom: 1px solid rgba(0,0,0,0.7); margin-bottom: 2px;">History</div>

<div style="text-align: justify; font-size: 11px; line-height: 100%;">
Mal was the product of a fling between muggle actress Tracy Barberry and Gregory Sharpe. Not five minutes after Tracy found out she was pregnant, Greg left the scene. He sent the occasional birthday card about a month too late, but eventually stopped making any contact with Mal around the time he was seven.

Not able to support a baby on her own, Tracy raised Mal with a string of on and off again boyfriends. His childhood wasn't the worst - he wasn't abused or seriously neglected, but his mother wasn't really into the whole "being a mother" thing. She was more into the resentful, "I could have been a successful actress if it weren't for you" thing.

Being a muggle, Tracy didn’t make much of the weird things that started happening around Mal when he was three. The shower and sink would run when he started crying, toys that were up on shelves would wind up all over the floor. His magic was starting to manifest in ways that were small enough for her to overlook or ignore. When Mal turned 10, his mother married her long-time (six months) boyfriend. Three months later, she had Mal’s little sister, and he was immediately pushed aside for the new baby.

The timing was fair enough. After only nearly a year of emotional neglect, Mal received his Hogwarts letter. It was confusing, to say the least, since no one in the family had any idea what magic even was. They thought it was a joke at first, and just tossed the letters as they kept coming. Eventually, Hogwarts sent a representative to explain that yes, magic was real and yes, Mal was a wizard.

Hogwarts took a lot of getting used to, and Mal’s already withdrawn and less than personable personality didn’t exactly make making friends easy. He was sorted into Ravenclaw, which put him with more studious and applied students than himself. It was intimidating at first, since people suddenly had expectations of him. But things got a little easier when he discovered his knack and love for Charms. It helped him see that he was able to do something more than be a hindrance, unlike what his mother had always told him.

Mal found himself indifferent to the Statute. As a Muggleborn, he was already getting used to integrating magic and muggle society, so it was just a matter of everyone else catching up.

Oh, and Mal doesn’t know it, but he’s Marcus Barrow’s half-brother.
