We are only as strong as we are united

THE INTERNATIONAL STATUTE OF TRANSPARENCY

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. Rather than withholding from one another, we today take a step toward a better future, as the union of two such extraordinary cultures and resources promises a betterment in quality of life for all. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

Mal couldn’t wait for the year over, but at the same time, he wasn’t looking forward to the new one beginning. Every year just sort of rolled together, it wasn’t like anything spectacular ever happened to him. Even things that other people would find wonderful were just sort of bad news for him. The year had brought him a new half-brother and…again, bad news.

The castle felt particularly crowded, and he wasn’t much of one to go outside, so he was sort of stuck milling between the two, doing his best to go undetected by staff and students. It had been working for a while, and he even managed to grab a plate of food without much hassle.

He found himself sitting in a corner in near the entryway, chowing down on his makeshift meal. The Caretaker had made a passing joke, asking if he was standing guard for the evening. Mal just glowered at him until he left. The scowl seemed to stick, and he didn’t have a word for anyone who passed by. Even the one kid that kicked at his legs went ignored.

Why couldn’t people just leave him alone? Why couldn’t the school year just be over? Then he could go back to being alone, just like he liked.

Marc had had a little bit of time to sorta-kinda process what had happened between him and Mal, but he hadn't really made any progress. He was still majorly upset by the whole thing, and it still didn't make a single lick of sense. How could Mal possibly not want a brother? Especially one as cool as Marc? Like, sure, maybe he was something of a dumbass, but among the kids at Hogwarts, Marc was undeniably cool. He was one of the nicest kids there, had a zillion friends and acquaintances, and people liked to be around him.

So why didn't his charm work on Mal?

But he wasn't gonna worry about it tonight. Nope. He was gonna shove it out of his brain. He'd been obsessing over it for plenty long enough. This was New Year's Eve, and it was gonna be fun, damn it!

He and a bunch of his pals finished eating their dinner, and then they decided to go outside and run around just for the sake of enjoying the novelty of being allowed out during the night. That was cool, after all. So they went flooding out of the Great Hall, shoving each other and making dumb jokes and laughing about how awesome the night was gonna be, and none of them noticed Mal all tiny in the corner. Marc didn't even notice him at first. The kid was easy to miss, really. He was scrawny and quiet and seemed to want to be invisible.

But then Marc saw him and stopped in his tracks. One kid asked if he wanted them to wait, but Marc waved them off, indicating that he'd catch up with them on the grounds. And then he nervously adjusted his hat on his head as he took a few awkward steps toward Mal.

He cleared his throat. "Uh ... hey. Whatcha doin'? You wanna hang out with us?"

Mal pulled his legs closer to himself as the gaggle of idiots went roaming by. They weren’t paying attention, and he wasn’t looking forward to being tripped over or trampled. He was about to go back to eating, when he spotted Marc among the group. No. No no no. Mal ducked his head down, watching him through a sideways glance. With any luck Marc would just miss him entirely. He seemed slow enough to be oblivious to his surroundings, so Mal figured the odds were in his favor.

At first, it seemed like it had worked. Marc almost, almost passed him by. And then he had to stop and come lumbering over to Mal. Damn.

When Marc cleared his throat and spoke, Mal sighed and just stared at his food for a moment before looking up. He was still scowling slightly, but that appeared to fade the longer he looked up at Marc. He really, really didn’t want to hang out with him. It would just be awkward and annoying and would just end badly for the both of them. Not wanting to encourage the notion without being a complete ass, Mal put on his best look of indifference.

“I’m eating. I don’t want to hang out with you lot.”

Marc didn't approach, since he'd at least figured out that Mal didn't want him to be physically close, but he also didn't back off any. He just sort of gave Mal a long look, like he was trying to figure him out. Dissect him with his eyes, or something. The kid was confusing. Marc should just leave him alone to do his antisocial weird bullshit thing.

But ... but he couldn't. He felt so drawn to Mal. It literally felt like there was an invisible string wrapped around his heart and extending out to where Mal was. Just the knowledge that they were brothers - brothers! - meant that nothing else mattered. Nothing else should matter! They were family!

And he was sad. He'd probably deny it until he was blue in the face, but it rolled off him in waves. At least, as far as Marc was concerned. Mal was fucking sad. Just generally. And that wasn't OK.

Finally, he shrugged. "You know, it could be fun. It usually is fun. Hanging out with people. They're not as bad as you seem to think they are. What's the harm in just giving it a chance?" Hanging out with me. Giving me a chance. Your brother.

Marc started staring, and Mal immediately looked back down at his plate. He hated when people stared at him. People stared at him when he did something wrong. When he said something they didn’t like. When they wanted him to go away. He had been stared at by other students, by his mother, by her old boyfriends and his new stepfather. He hated being stared at.

After a moment he looked back up, only to find Marc still staring. He wanted to get up and walk away, but something about being examined like that had him paralyzed. He still didn’t know a lot about Marc, so he didn’t know what he was aiming at by just looking at Mal like that. Knowing that he was a blood relation and not just some random student made it worse in a way. It gave him more power over Mal than any other student. It gave him the power to really, truly hurt him if he wanted. Not just a punch or name calling. Whether he knew it or not, he’d be able to cut Mal deeply.

Finally the silence was broken, and Mal’s face contorted into something unpleasant. “What, go running off with you all just so you can ditch me?” That was the only potential conclusion to hanging out with Marc and his friends. Obviously.
