THE INTERNATIONAL STATUTE OF TRANSPARENCY

"On this day, the thirteenth of June of the year two thousand and thirty four, in the spirit of honesty, safety and the equality of all mankind, the magical population and the non-magical population will no longer remain hidden from one another, but will be unified as one. This statute applies to every living being that is capable of thinking and reasoning for itself. Either Discrimination or Deceptiveness in respect to the statute are both considered the highest form of noncompliance in all countries involved, and are punishable as treason. Every world leader, both magical and non-magical, have signed this statute in agreement that Transparency between the respective communities of the world is the best path toward knowledge and peace."

Gwen is a muggle, and was brought up on a farm. She was homeschooled, but she did have friends in a nearby village. Mostly, though, she spent her time playing with her brothers, Jack and Hunter, and her younger sister Grace. Then Jack was killed. And shit happened. And she applied for Hogwarts when the statute was passed, having heard so much about Hogwarts from her brother.

@Shane. 800. woooohoooo!
i saw the light fade from the
sky
Gwen's eyes opened slowly and she took a moment to take in her surroundings. She was so used to waking up in a rush, her mother basically chasing her out of bed. But now, things were so different. She'd be waking up at her own leisure, in her own time. Whether or not she was happy about it was yet to be decided. She looked to the still dark sky outside, and then the watch on her nightstand. 5 am. She ought to sleep more, but she knew that -in the state she was now in- she'd never fall back asleep. So she got out of bed and got ready for the day, making sure not to wake Fiona in the process.

She found herself leaving the dungeons of Hogwarts half an hour later, hoping no professors would dislike her early routines. She couldn't really help it. She could stay in the common rooms, but it really wasn't tempting. The big oaken doors were shut, but she'd found a small corridor leading to a much smaller exit that was usually open at this hour. The brisk November air made her wrap her Hufflepuff cloak around her tighter as she walked from the castle and around on the grounds. For a moment, she wondered if she ought to just go back inside again, but then she remembered that there was one place she had yet to check out.

Gwen had been excited to find out about the volatile tree that hid a secret passage into a big, old, rotted house that Hunter had told her about. And that's where she went. The tree hovered threateningly above her, but with a long stick, she pressed the knob like Hunter had told her to. She slid in through the entrance, and only saw darkness in front of her. She briefly wondered if she ought to go back and bring someone with her, because this might be too scary without proper lighting. But she finally took a breath and put one hand out directly in front of her, while the other touched the top of the tunnel, and that's how she walked for the long distance, before the tunnel slimmed down, and her hand pressed against a hatch.

She knew it was a house, but she hadn't known it'd be so big. She took a few seconds to adjust to the sudden light. The sun was obviously coming up now. She looked around and saw that the windows and doors were bolted shut. The thrill of this place made Gwen grin, and she silently moved around, walking carefully up a set of stairs, managing to not make a sound. She could see the places where Hunter and Ariel had fixed the place from how old it had obviously looked before, but some of the furniture looked pretty worn already. She took a right and walked into a new room. And stopped dead.

For a moment, Gwen froze. She didn't know what to do as her eyes took in the human being, lying curled up on the floor in front of her. He was unconscious, but this was not at all what she first noted. The first thing that caught her eye was the massive extent of skin. She rarely saw that much skin. Why? People usually wore clothes around her. The second thing was the black ink etched into the person. Tattoos, and quite a few of them. They looked like drawings, and in Gwen's mind, she barely registered that she liked them before she noted the thing she'd have a hard time forgetting. His scars. His many scars. When she'd noticed all of this, the image replayed in her mind, and she finally managed to wrap her mind around them. And suddenly she found herself blushing. She was standing in the room with a butt naked guy she didn't recognise, and he looked like he hurt.

Gwen should've left. Like... he was naked. But the scars... The scars made her stay. As far as she knew, he'd yet to hear her, to wake up, be aware of her presence. And then she felt freaked. What if he was...? No. No, Gwen had sworn never to lay eyes on another dead body in her near future. Preferably in her lifetime. She refused to think that this guy was dead. No chance. She finally unfroze and walked closer to the guy, keeping her eyes fixed on his back. She shook off her cloak, which made her realise how cold it actually was. She made it cover what it could, and then put her hand on his shoulder. "Hey, wake up." Her voice was silent, and she shook him gently, terrified that she might hurt him more.

NOTES: November

That night had been one of the worst. The shakes had started early as the moon rose. He had run out to the tree alone, forgetting to take the Wolfsbane potion, only wanting to get away, to not let anyone see what he would soon become. He had made it to the tree and tore through the tunnel, only just making it out of the hatch when the wolf inside him lashed out and took full control. The screaming was the worse of it if you weren’t actually feeling what he was. The physical change was so agonizing this time around that they probably heard his blood curdling screams in Hogsmead. He had been told by the Headmaster that there hadn’t been a werewolf using the shack since before even the first wizarding war so he could only imagine how the sound of him effected those who had to hear it.

After even the change it only got worse. He had lost all control, all reason. All that mattered was his baser instincts, the need to be an animal and do only what animals did. He needed to feed, to fight, to run, to do all these things at that moment. However the house had been built JUST for people like him, and instead of finding any kind of way out Shane found himself growing violently frustrated. He clawed deep gashes in the walls and the doors. He ripped up already damaged furniture and threw it around rooms, howling and snarling at the wooden cage he had been forcefully trapped in. Not by any kind of captor mind you, no this was his own doing and the wolf inside hated him for it. So soon as it realized who the real enemy was it acted. The scratching, the gashes in his body from his claws that immediately healed but turned into ugly scars. It was all so agonizing to handle, and yet there was a sick side of him that wanted more, that desired it as someone would desire a kink or a thrill. It was a drug that he needed and would do anything to get.

However, as fast and long it went it almost ended quicker than could be imagined. The pain of his self-attack affected him on such a scale that eventually he passed out right there on the floor. It took many hours for his human mentality to even wrestle control back, yet luckily he had when he felt someone nudge him and tell him to wake up. What they didn’t realize was that his new scars were sore, whoever this was wasn’t someone who knew because they were staff. He recognized the voice but couldn’t place it. She nudged him again and this time Shane let out a groan and shifted a little. He needed to wake up, to get out of the fog and do what he had always done before. Hide and pretend he had just been sick. No matter how BS was starting to think his little excuse was, he could never really tell them WHY he was always exhausted and seemed to be in a killer mood lately.

After a good minute Shane tried to push himself up and found it hard to even move. He could feel the wood against his bare skin, yet didn’t seem to be able to actually rise. Great, he had really kicked his ass this time hadn't he? "Just.....give....it to me straight.....how bad do I look?"

Gwen jumped a bit, and felt her heart speed up as the guy omitted a groan. Good, he was awake. He was conscious. He was alive. He shifted a bit, so Gwen hesitantly moved a very little back, giving him enough space, but not enough so she couldn't help him if he needed it. She slowly sat down on the floor, her arms hugging her knees. He looked like he was in so much pain! She didn't know how to deal with that. Should she ask him if he was okay? Of course not, he obviously wasn't. She looked at his shoulders again, and noticed that some of the scars were redder than the others. The horror that this wasn't a thing of the past struck her and she felt herself hugging her knees ever closer.

She watched him in silence, waiting for him to show her that he was not as bad as he looked. But when he stirred she not only realised that he was in her house, but also that the pain was probably worse than it looked, and it looked bad. How bad do I look? Oh, Gwen really didn't want to answer that question. How bad did he look? "Um..." she started, looking into his eyes. She knew people often found it consoling to have others smile at them, or make it seem less bad than it was. But Gwen... Gwen loved honesty. She lifted her head a bit and put her chin on top of her knees. "You look like you've been to hell and back," she finally said. She tried to give him a consoling smile, but it probably turned out like a grimace. She honestly didn't know what to do. She didn't even know him, she'd just seen him in the common room and at the different meals.

Her eyes looked around the room, and out the doorframe behind her before she looked back at him. She didn't want to think of the reasons that he might be in pain, because only a very few of them lead to the outcome of no clothes, and she didn't want to know of the evil of other humans. She was certain her eyes were filled with fear for him, though, and she wasn't sure how he'd take that. She finally took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to calm her turbulent mind. When she opened them again, she returned her attention to him. "Were you ... attacked?" Her voice was small, as if she was stepping onto territory she had no authorisation to step onto. She feared his answer, she feared his reaction. Because no matter what they were, what could she possibly do to help him? She hadn't felt so childlike in a while, and she was shocked at how terrifying it felt. It made her realise that, no matter what she'd gone through, she hadn't really grown past her own age when her brother died. She was just as helpless as any 15 year old. And a muggle at that.

O she was a muggle AND was asking what had happened to him? All the better. Because what seemed more exciting then explaining to a muggle girl, by the way, the second he had met in as many days, that he in fact was a werewolf. Not even the sexy ones like they showed in his home country on all those old movies….what were they called? Before some dumb shit? No, it was nothing as glamorous as that. Nope, most of the time it was like this, waking up in places you’re not sure about after doing some things as a half man half wolf. She would very much probably not enjoy hearing about that though, most people didn’t. So, after a good moment Shane looked up at Gwen and smiled as best he could….and lied through his teeth. “Its funny the animals you can run into in the Forbidden forest. Makes you wonder why its even there if they had to label it forbidden.” He smirked and chuckled.

Shane could slowly feel his strength returning and even the pain starting to dissipate. That meant that his wounds were healing, good, he needed to get out of there and find clothes. O….and probably help this pretty girl along with not remembering anything about what she had seen in the shrieking shake. He looked around for his pants, breaking eye contact with those beautiful orbs she had and tried to look around for them. After about a minute or two he looked back at Gwen and gave a sheepish smirk. “Wouldn’t have, by chance, seen my pants on the way in here did you?” She already seemed caught off guard, after the words had left his mouth he started to wonder if she completely fall off the map with her re-realization that he was still naked under her cloak. There was a small part of him that wanted to see this reaction, maybe see how cute she was when she was taken off guard. It was something you would see on an old sitcom in the muggle world, but Shane was old fashioned like that. More mid American nineties then anything after, but he had caught himself watching some of the old sitcoms before he through on some music and tried to live what always seemed to the outside world, a normal muggle life.

Gwen all but winced as her fellow Hufflepuff once again pushed himself up and this time kinda succeeded. She didn’t mind his snarky reply though, it kinda made her realise he couldn’t be so bad off that he couldn’t think of anything defensive. As long as people were well conscious, they were defensive, so she supposed he wasn’t in danger of passing out. Unless this was a … more repeated thing. And given his scars, some white some very red, she supposed the last guess was more likely. She shook her head slightly at his comment, and then lurched forward when he gasped, and stopped herself midway when he leaned against the wall. Her right hand was still slightly stretched out, her left pushing her off the ground, but she fell back down again when he said he’d be okay in five to ten minutes. She raised her eyebrows. ”Are you sure about that? Because you really look like you’re … well, a hairsbreadth away from passing out,” she carefully pointed out, not really sure how he’d take that.

She felt her eyes widen in shock. She was about to ask more when he shook his head and groaned. She flinched. It really didn’t sound like he’d be okay anytime soon. Maybe she ought to run back to the castle to get a professor? But she really didn’t want to leave him, not even for a second. ”Yeah, you should probably try to sit still,” she all but whispered, as if sound would make him any worse. She looked on as the sun finally lit the room up a bit, and she could see his scars even better. Or worse, depending on your definition. But she also saw his tattoos better, and she found herself fascinated with the one running from his elbow and down his forearm.

She looked back up at him to ask him about them, maybe -hopefully- taking his mind of his obvious pain. People liked talking about their choices, and Gwen loved listening to them. But she was stopped when she met his eyes. He looked confused, which confused her. But only at that point did she remember that this guy, despite currently looking like he’d been mauled by a tiger, had actually been a subject of discussion between her fellow fifth year Hufflepuff girls at dinner at a point. She hadn’t taken part of the conversation, she wasn’t big on discussing what people looked like, whether they were attractive or not. But now, looking at him, she could easily understand why.

She blinked when he winced and shook her thoughts out of her mind, once again wondering what to do. She shrugged lightly. ”I’m a muggle. I only got to Hogwarts this year,” she explained softly, ”I’ve seen you around.” The words left her mouth before she even though about them, and when they’d been said, she had to fight a blush, and put on an adamant face, finally managing to give him a smile. ”The name’s Gwen,” she added, finding her eyes tracing over him one more time, trying to define just how much damage was done to him. And by what. Her face went serious again, and she knew she was looking at him with compassion, though he might interpret it as pity. She hoped it didn’t come across that way, she knew how well that was received. ”Um, do you think you can tell me what happened?”

Gwen knew her question might be personal, but what was she supposed to do? Not ask him how he got inflicted with all these scars and injuries? However, what could she do now? He'd lied to her, she knew. Not because his face revealed it, actually he seemed to be a pretty decent liar. But his scars were so many, too many, and they were all of the same sort, as if claws had ripped his skin open. And besides, was it her mind playing tricks on her, or did the redness seem to slowly turn duller? She was sure something magical was involved, she just had no idea what. And since she didn't, she could really call him a liar either. However, her doubt was probably clear on her face, and he could do whatever he wanted with that.

One thing was certain, however; the forbidden forest was one thing Gwen would never truly understand. How, on earth, could they have a school where people started as eleven-year-olds so close to a forest of vicious and bloodthirsty creatures? Not that she was the first to turn down an adventure with a bit of thrill. "I'm thinking it should also give a clue to the students not to go running into it," she pointed out with a slight twinkle in her eye. If he wanted to play the lie, she'd let him; it wasn't her business to go poking her nose into things that didn't concern her. But she couldn't help her curiosity spiking at his lie. People lied to protect themselves. At least, if they were good people. Maybe Shane wasn't. But she didn't really get a bad vibe from him.

Her thoughts were momentarily and immediately stopped when he mentioned clothes. She couldn't stop the blush this time, but though she was abashed, she found his expression humorous and she had to laugh through the blush. She then got to her feet. "I might've seen something, and if not, I'll find something around here," she said softly, though still kinda embarrassed. She wondered what on earth Hunter would think if he saw her now, especially since he told her about the place. He'd probably be mortified and hex her blind or something. She gave Shane an almost apologetically awkward smile and vanished from the room.

...

Finding the trousers hadn't been a problem, and she'd also found something looking like a sweater or t-shirt, but it was torn to shreds. She decided not to bring that and found a blanket instead. Even that had a claw mark, but she figured it'd do better than the lookalike garment. She returned to the room pretty quickly, though she might've lingered a slight bit to try to get her mind around this. She smiled as she walked inside. "I found some stuff, possibly your trousers, and a blanket," she said as she handed them over to him. The uncomfortable feeling resurfaced and she bit her lip. "Um... I'll, er, just wait right outside." She didn't wait for him to react to that statement and turned on her heel, leaving the room again, leaning against the wall. Holy shit, what did I just walk into?

NOTES:  November

Shane pulled his pants on and checked the pockets for his wand, finding it in surprisingly good condition compared to his pants. There were claw marks everywhere and yet somehow the eleven-and-a-half-inch wand was fine. Ironic if he really thought about it. Yet that wasn’t exactly what was going through his mind at that moment. No, what was going through his mind as he twirled his wand between his fingers, standing in that room shirtless, feeling the cool winter air touch his skin, was whether he was really going to take this girls memories of finding him. If he did then she wouldn’t remember this, she would be lost on what happened the last couple of hours and then probably assume she had fallen asleep in the common room like he had planned the moment he woke up and realized he wasn’t alone. It would be so very easy. He had done it many times before and without remorse. His secret had been kept safe and no one knew what had happened. Then why, in the name that was holy, was he having issues this time around.

Absent mindedly he walked forward out of the room, his eyes still on his wand as he twirled it in his fingers, still trying to understand the hesitation that had taken hold of him. His wounds were fully healed by now and just scars against his pale skin, he had no pain anymore and nothing encumbered him. To be honest, except for some aching here and there, he felt like he could go for a run without any issue. Well, that is except what was going through his mind at that moment. What made it worse, was when he finally did break eye contact with his wand and look up, he saw her waiting for him. She didn’t have a clue who she had met or who she had helped. Hell, for all he knew she really hadn’t ever noticed him in their common room. Yet as he looked at her he started to realize something. She had known he was lying and still helped him. Her face, as he spoke was full of doubt. She knew he had secrets and had just gone with it. Maybe she would look for an answer later, but for now she had stepped back and not said anything. This muggle wasn’t looking for answers, wasn’t looking to frame him. No, it seemed more likeshe had actually cared. Well, that was new…..what does he do with that kind of thing?

“Hey, umm, I am at least partially dressed.” He waited till she turned around before he spread his arms out to reveal his shirtless chest and hacked up blue jeans adorning his legs. “How do I look? Think  anyone would notice anything a miss?” He spoke so casual, yet held his wand delicately in his hand like he was ready to turn it on her if he decided to. Yet did he know that she would tell anyone anything, or that she even had guess what was going on? It was really starting to be hard to tell…

Gwen couldn't really stop her mind from spinning, wondering what had happened to the guy, if he really was okay or not. She felt pretty tense, and when she heard the shuffling of feet and footsteps, she briefly closed her eyes and opened them again. As he spoke up, Gwen took less than a second to decide how to behave for the reminder of her time with him. So she turned around with a dramatically dubious expression, her eyes almost closed in skepticism. He was indeed partially dressed, but she couldn't really deny to herself that his shirtless wasn't distracting. She had intended to keep the overdramatic expression for a little bit, but at his hands raising and his question, Gwen let a deep laugh escape her.

She shook her head and made a casual guesture to 1, his torn jeans, and 2, his bare chest. "What? You walking around halfnaked in the middle of November? Nah, I'm sure wizards always walk around like that. I wouldn't know, though, I'm a muggle, remember?" she pointed out with an easy grin. Okay, so maybe it had helped that he wasn't naked anymore. She honestly felt more like herself. And the wounds didn't seem so bad anymore. Maybe the soft light in the other room had tricked her eyes. The image when she found him flashed before her though, and it felt like something was amiss. But she didn't want to linger on it. But her grin faded a bit and her eyes drilled into his. "You seem better. Are you? You can lean on me if -um, I mean, if it hurts to walk... er, I- I just mean if you need help..." Gwen trailed off, leaving the obvious "I'll help you" hanging in the air. Okay, so maybe she wasn't quite herself yet.

For a moment she wondered what more to say, and she felt her weight move from one foot to the other. She caught herself before she did it again, and took a breath, finally moving her eyes away from his to look down the short hallway. And then something hit her. Well, that's rude! she thought calmly, but didn't really feel offended. He was hurt, after all! "You didn't tell me your name," she said, her eyes finding his again, this time a friendly smile had returned to her face. She felt like she'd heard it from other people, he wasn't an unfamiliar guy on the school. Apparently, he seemed to have a few admirers, the type of people who were always so damned attracted to mysteries. Duncan was also popular, for some goddamned unfathomable reason. Gwen did not understand that one. Mysterious people are one thing, they can be pretty intriguing. But brooding people like Duncan? No. Just ... No. At least this guy with his intense eyes gave the impression of looking as if he actually was wondering who you were, and slightly interested in what you had to say, knowing you were a freaking human being.

Gwen shook Duncan from her thoughts and made a gesture down the hallway. "Should we head back to the school? You should probably see the healer, whatever the cuts, it could be infected with something," she said in a rational voice, and started walking slowly down the hallway.

Shane smirked at her comment about her being a muggle and not knowing exactly what was normal for wizards. She was actually pretty right that him being shirtless wouldn’t exactly be the best etiquette for wizards either but what choice did he really have? However even this was clouded over by something interesting that distracted him. She was still worried about him and whether he could make it to the castle. She seemed tender even in a situation as odd as this. Yes the oddity of it all was not lost on her, Shane could tell by her how they seemed to be switching between quit a few emotions, but the one that was held strong was concern. Was messing with her memory such a reasonable thing now? She was no threat if she was more worried about getting him safely back to Hogwarts. Hell, she might even be useful if she hung around a bit more with him. That however led to another large question, could he trust her? He could start by her answering her request at least right?

“No, I can walk.” Shane gave her another smirk, moving a bit closer to her and then winked before saying “And you can call me Shane.” and turning towards the hallway she had glanced towards. He didn’t know exactly what way she had come in but he knew which way would make more sense to leave by. He turned his head to see if she was fallowing or willing to walk level with him before speaking. “Did you come through the Womping Willow pathway? Or did you just walk in through the front door?” He wasn’t trying to be rude or anything. On the contrary he was interested, because those who knew about the willow entrance usually had been told by someone specific who knew the house very well. If you knew it well enough to know its secrets, then Shane wanted to know you. The last thing he need was some kid walking in while he was transforming and getting hurt.

Shane kept his eyes on Gwen, trying to keep it casual, even if there was more in his mind then a nonchalant look. She was interesting him more and more and he even had gotten it into his mind not to mess with hers. That was pretty big. What was this girls story? Why was she slumming around the Shack? Who was she and what could make him trust her? Those were among the biggest things, and yet he spoke none of them. To worried that he might say the wrong thing and scare her off. Something he at this point didn’t want to risk in the slightest.
